Nosey Little Neighbors:

The ongoing research program into the Bandicoots on Eastern Hill has revealed some amazing results! While the Bushland portion of the population (in the national park and North Head) supports more Bandicoots in total, a higher proportion of adult females found in the urban area were found to be actively breeding in May 2014. In the urban area, a whopping 78% of the adult females were still breeding in May, compared to 32% in the Bushland!. This indicates the ‘rich pickings’ that the Eastern Hill yards provide for our nosey little neighbors.  Keep up the great work with the native mulching and watering.

The Little Penguins of Manly Wharf

The book is published by the Foundation for National Parks and Wildlife and is available from Council Town Hall, and all good bookstores. ISBN – 978-0-9875708-0-2

The Little Penguins of Manly Wharf by Felicity Pulman, photography by David Jenkins.

“Anna’s grandpa says that when he was her age, in 1952, there were as many as 500 penguins in the Manly area. By 1990 there were only about 35 left.”

Today in Manly, we have about 70 breeding pairs, and the conservation of the Little Penguins is an ongoing challenge. The book includes stories of the many members of an interactive and cooperative community playing a part in the conservation and protection of the Little Penguins of Manly.

Beautiful colour photos, some covering a full page, show the action and the people. While pages devoted to penguin facts and the threats to the species help provide an insight into the challenges and remarkable characteristics of this endangered population.

Outstanding reading for all ages, particularly children, the proceeds of book sales go towards the care and protection of these beautiful birds.
